( She was no longer small enough to squeeze comfortably into that small space between floorboards and mattress, but she didn't care. Her mother had dragged her out of the closet and found a way to unlock the bathroom door, and the neighbor had caught her when she'd tried to make a break for it outside. If she hadn't, she could've gotten away. Rosalia was about as likely to chase after her across rain-softened ground as she was to crouch down on the floor and paw through the dusty bed skirt to grab her and haul her out a second time. It was dirty, and she might get a run in her hose. )
