deep_red_bellsThis is found perched on Baileigh and Sark’s bedroom dresser on Sunday morning, with a big glossy navy blue bow on top of it. Nestled inside the top compartments are several colorful, whimsical ties, carefully rolled and placed just so, a pair of sailboat cufflinks, and the newest model of the iPhone. Balanced in front of it is a card:

Father’s Day was never an event for me growing up, but I remember all the kids that I was friends with always seemed to buy the same things, every year: ties were the most popular, but belts, watches, various gadgets, electronics, or fishing and hunting equipment--most of them very ugly and things I‘m willing to bet were hardly ever used, which, of course, isn‘t the point. Since you already own more watches than any one person should and a fair amount of gadgets, and you do not, to my knowledge, have much of an urge to go out and shoot small animals, I went with the ties, and threw in the cufflinks to celebrate your new found love for boats. And yes, I hid the iPhone from you when it came in. What? I had to cover the gadget base somehow! And look how nice it looks in your shiny new charging valet! Which fills in the blank spot on our dresser quite nicely!
My point (and I have one, really) is that even though it’ll be a few years before you’ll get homemade cards made with crayons and construction paper and electronic carvings knives and “#1 Dad” ties (which unfortunately Armani doesn’t make, I looked), this is your first Father’s Day, and I wasn’t about to let it go unmarked, and I figured it should be kicked off in as traditional a way as possible.
